Wagner wins Readers’ Choice Award

3 Aug

Ashley Wagner, the 2012 U.S. champion, is the winner of SKATING magazine Readers’ Choice Skater of the Year Award (Michelle Kwan Trophy).

Wagner, who trains in California under legendary coach John Nicks, enjoyed the best season of her career. She started by winning the bronze medal at Skate Canada before claiming her first U.S. title at the 2012 U.S. Championships in San Jose, Calif. Less than two weeks later, she beat an outstanding international field to win the gold medal at the Four Continents Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 21-year-old from Alexandria, Va., rallied after the short program to finish fourth at the World Championships in Nice, France.

“I think this past year was huge for me and a big leap and something I needed to do,” Wagner said. “Both of my programs were so well-received, especially Black Swan, from my fans that it made it even more satisfying for me, because I could tell everyone was really enjoying what I was putting out.

“To be awarded this honor is like icing on the cake for such a great season.”

Finishing next were the Skyliners, ICE’Kateers, Miami University and the ice dance team of Lynn Kriengkrairut and Logan Giulietti-Schmitt.

Wagner will be awarded the Michelle Kwan Trophy at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Championships in Omaha, Neb.
