From Russia With Love – Rachael Flatt competes at Rostelecom Cup for first time since winning silver in 2008. She began the season at Skate Canada.
Senior Year – Christina Gao continues her first international senior season in Moscow. She opened the year with a fi fth-place showing at Cup of China.
Step Up – Agnes Zawadaki looks to make a step up onto the podium this year in Russia. She finished fourth at this event a season ago. Zawadzki began the 2011-12 campaign at NHK Trophy two weeks ago.
Go for the Gold – Jeremy Abbott looks for his second gold of the season after winning Cup of China in early November. Abbott is the reigning Rostelecom Cup bronze medalist and competes here for the third time (4th in 2008). A medal of any color will allow Abbott to qualify for the 2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in December, an event he won in 2008.
Back in Action – Brandon Mroz started the season at NHK Trophy a few weeks ago where he landed the first ever quad Lutz in an ISU competition during the short program. He competes in Russia for the first time since placing seventh at this event in 2009.
First Timers – Ashley Cain & Joshua Reagan make their Grand Prix Series Debut in Moscow. The 2011 U.S. junior champions started the season by finishing fourth at 2011 Cup of Nice. They have not competed in Russia before.
Streaking – Meryl Davis & Charlie White look to make it eight straight gold medals with a win in Moscow. Dating back to the beginning of the 2010 Grand Prix season, the duo has won seven straight competitons. They are the reigning Grand Prix Final champions and a medal here will earn them a fourth trip to the Final.
Last Week – Alissa Czisny qualified for the Grand Prix Final thanks to a third-place finish. Czisny is the reigning Grand Prix champion. Adam Rippon and Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig finished fourth while Madison Chock & Evan Bates placed fifth.

11:40 a.m.
Friday was an active day at 2011 Skate Canada, the second event in the ISU Grand Prix Series. Here are the results:
Ladies
The three American ladies, Ashley Wagner, Rachael Flatt and Mirai Nagasu are in the top five after the short program behind 14-year-old Russian Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who leads the pack with 59.57 points. As noted in yesterday’s blog, both Wagner and Flatt were happy with their short programs and they are looking forward to today. Nagasu has slightly more work to do to reach the podium, but can feed off her first place performance at the Nebelhorn Trophy from earlier this year. Today, the ladies will perform their free skate at 2:15 p.m.
Men
After the men’s short program, there is a separation in the pack. Javier Fernandez of Spain shattered his personal best and received 84.71 points and is in first place. Diasuke Takahashi of Japan is in second with 84.66 and reigning World champion Patrick Chan of Canada was not flawless, but still received 83.28 points and is in third. American Adam Rippon is in fourth, more than ten points behind Chan with 72.89 and Ross Miner is in seventh with 60.83 points. The men will perform their free skate at 7:10 p.m.
Ice Dancing
Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were superb as they skated to a more than eight-point lead over their teammates Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje. The performance by Virtue and Moir answered the questions asked by Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White when they went on to win Skate America last weekend. Americans Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished in sixth with 50.43 points after a strong short dance ended with a late fall. The free dance will conclude Skate Canada on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Pairs
There were no Americans entered in the pairs event at Skate Canada. Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia lead the competition with 70.42 points, a more than eight-point advantage over second place. The pairs free skate is at 4:15 p.m. today.
Cup of Nice
In his senior international debut, American Keegan Messing posted an impressive 77.75 points in his short program to lead by nearly 10 points going into today’s free skate. The competition has started and they are 10 skaters through the 25 to compete. Messing will skate last, and when he finishes, we will post an update on Twitter.
In pairs, Ashley Cain and Joshua Reagan, also in their senior international debut, are in third with 53.04 points in their short program. Fellow Americans Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker are in fourth with 52.04 points. The competition is led by Italians Stefania Berton and Ondrej Hotarek with 57.64 points.

The ladies short program has ended at 2011 Skate Canada with Ashley Wagner finishing in second place with a score of 54.50 points. Rachael Flatt is in third with 54.23 points and Mirai Nagasu is fifth with 52.73 points. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia is in first with a score of 59.57.
Ashley Wagner on her short program:
“Today went very well and I was extremely pleased with my short program. It was a clean program; my triple Lutz was a little shaky and I would have preferred it to have been a lot more solid, but for the start of my Grand Prix season, I’m very pleased with it. I have to keep the same mentality I had today for tomorrow and I think I’ll be set for this competition.”
Rachael Flatt on her short program:
“I am incredibly excited about how things went today. It was a great performance and a great start to the season so I’m looking forward to the long program tomorrow.”
The pairs are completing their short program. There are no Americans in this event. Skate Canada continues tonight with the men and ice dancing events.
In France, Keegan Messing, in his senior international debut, posted a scored of 77.75 points, and leads the Cup of Nice by more than 10 points. His program included a triple-triple combination and a level four straightline step sequence.
8:47 a.m.
On Friday, the second ISU Grand Prix Series event, Skate Canada, will begin at 2:05 p.m. Eastern Time in Mississauga, ON. Here is a list of the members of Team USA that are participating:
